ruark-audio-sabre-r-bookshelf-speakers
Ruark Audio Sabre-R Bookshelf Speakers

The Ruark Sabre-R is a compact, rear-ported bookshelf speaker built for listeners who want rich, detailed sound from a stand or bookshelf. It pairs a 28mm silk dome tweeter with a 130mm NS+ natural fibre mid-bass driver inside a damped and braced wood composite enclosure, delivering the kind of midrange warmth and bass weight that makes you forget you're listening to a bookshelf speaker. Bi-wireable binding posts and a choice of Fused Walnut or Satin Charcoal finishes round out a speaker that punches well above its size.

Key Features of the Ruark Sabre-R

Classic 2-Way Bookshelf Design: A compact, rear-ported loudspeaker engineered for musical, engaging performance

Ruark 28mm Silk Dome Tweeter: Custom silk dome with neodymium motor delivers smooth, detailed high frequencies without fatigue

Ruark 15cm NS+ Mid-Bass Driver: Treated natural fibre cone with long-throw motor for articulate midrange and extended bass

Damped and Braced Enclosure: Damped and braced wood composite construction

Bi-Wireable Crossover: Two sets of gold-plated binding posts allow single or bi-wire connection

Double Flared Bass Reflex Port: Double flared rear port tuned to 53Hz

Removable Magnetic Grille: Acoustically transparent cloth grille attaches magnetically for a clean look on or off

Two Premium Finishes: Fused Walnut veneer or Satin Charcoal lacquer, both with Walnut slat trim

Sabre-R Heritage

The original Sabre loudspeaker was the product that launched Ruark in 1985. Father and son Brian and Alan O'Rourke founded Ruark Acoustics with a shared passion for sound, and that first speaker earned immediate critical acclaim. Four decades on, the Sabre-R brings the story full circle. With many customers still enjoying the original Sabre, the Sabre-R was designed to enthral a new generation of music lovers with the same enduring commitment to musicality. Like its predecessor, these are speakers built to last.

Sabre-R Driver Technology

The Sabre-R's performance is built around a carefully matched pair of custom drivers. The 28mm silk dome tweeter uses a neodymium magnet and aluminium heatsink to produce high frequencies that are sweet and detailed without ever turning harsh or fatiguing. Below it, a 130mm NS+ mid-bass driver with a treated natural fibre cone handles the midrange and low end. It uses a long-throw motor system with a 30mm 4-layer voice coil. The crossover at 1.9kHz blends the two drivers cleanly across the frequency range.

Sabre-R Cabinet Construction

A speaker cabinet should be acoustically invisible. You want to hear the drivers, not the box. Ruark engineered the Sabre-R's 6.8-litre enclosure to get out of the way. The cabinet is damped and braced wood composite construction, and the double-flared rear port is tuned to 53Hz.

The veneers carry real eco credentials. Sustainable woods are skillfully spliced and recomposed to resemble slow-growing hardwoods, resulting in unique grain patterns and finishes you would normally find only on fine furniture. The craftsmanship is as deliberate as the engineering behind it.

Sabre-R Connection Options

The Sabre-R offers connection flexibility you would normally find on much larger loudspeakers. Two sets of high-quality, gold-plated 4mm binding posts let you run a standard single-wire configuration or take advantage of bi-wiring. Running separate cables to the tweeter and mid-bass driver can improve clarity, open up the soundstage, and let you extract the full performance the Sabre-R is capable of delivering. The 6-ohm nominal impedance (4.2-ohm minimum) and 86dB sensitivity mean any quality amplifier from 25 to 100 watts will drive these speakers comfortably.

Sabre-R Placement and Finishes

The Sabre-R's compact dimensions (H290 x W175 x D215mm) make it a natural fit for dedicated stands or bookshelves. Ruark recommends placing the rear of the speakers 10-20cm from the rear wall. Magnetic grilles snap on and off cleanly, giving you the option of a sleek covered look or a more technical aesthetic with the drivers exposed. Available in Fused Walnut veneer or Satin Charcoal lacquer, both with Walnut slat trim.

Explore the Ruark Audio Range

The Ruark R610 Music Console is the ideal amplifier for the Sabre-R, with Burr-Brown DAC, phono stage, and streaming built in.
